Why You Need to Go to London in the Spring

Travelling is one of the great pleasures of life. Few things can be more enjoyable than packing your bag while knowing that you’re heading to one of the world’s best cities. However, you can enhance your travel experience by opting to choose a certain time of the year.

London is beautiful in summer, autumn, winter and spring. But spring has its own beauty, a different facet that will give the city an entirely different look. It is as if you were seeing London through a colourful and vibrant filter that enhances your experience with the sweet smell of flowers that blossom all around the city.

The perfect time to enjoy a warm cup of tea in the terrace, and walk around with a light sweater on. Unlike winter, when you better wrap yourself up and endure the weight of your clothes on your shoulders. Or summer, when you better prepare yourself with light clothes that will not become see-through with the inevitable sweat that accompanies hot summer days.

Spring offers the perfect scenario to delight in this ancient city.

International Women’s Day Celebration

Support women’s rights in this increasingly growing march. The march starts in Oxford Street and ends in Trafalgar Square. It only takes place one day out of the year, so it is definitely a way of having your voice heard in this important matter.

The race consists of two goats – one that represents Oxford and the other Cambridge – to see which one wins in a race around Spitalfields City Farm. It is a fun day where there’s drinks, bands and goat related stuff that will bring out inevitable laughter.

Tea Outdoors

The British are famous for their tea. You can, obviously, drink tea any time of the year. But one thing is drinking it to stay warm in freezing temperatures and another one is being able to sit back, relax and enjoy the beauty that surrounds you with a classic Earl Grey cup of warm tea in a beautiful terrace surrounded by blossoming flowers.

St Patrick’s Day

The day when the city turns green. Outside of Ireland, London is the best place to be if you want to have the best time of your life in this joyful, booze-filled, celebration day.

Become Irish for a day and witness one of the greenest celebrations in the world. Accommodation can get tricky during the festive days, but there are wonderful options, find a London apartment rental and make the most out of your stay.

Craft Beer Festival

In a city that is famous for pubs and beer drinking, you can’t miss the opportunity to feast in the UK’s biggest craft beer festival, where 155 breweries are present to delight guests with every imaginable type of beer. Enjoy street food, music, dancing and more. The Craft Beer Festival is it a must-go-to event that no beer fan should miss.

Bottomless Margarita Festival

For those whose drink is not beer, there’s also the best margarita mixology festival taking place on May 5th in East London. The city brings together 15 of finest drinking establishments for the tequila cocktail tournament. As well as drinks, you can enjoy live music, drinks and a night to remember.

What to do in and around Kommetjie when you come for a visit?

Annually, European and American travellers flock to the white sandy beaches, blazing heat and lush green surrounds of Cape Town South Africa in the summer months of the southern hemisphere. Chasing a perpetual summer, many prefer to visit the Cape between November and March when the best weather is guarnateed.

But what about Cape Town in the winter months? At Kommetjie Beach Retreats, we welcome both seasons and encourage our international guests to visit and stay with us when the weather gets a bit colder due to the wonderful vacation opportunities that Cape Town winters have to offer. Below is a list of our favourite winter vacation activities for couples, families and singles in and around Kommetjie:

Kite surfing

Despite what many assume about Cape Town surfing and the summer swell and weather, the waves are better in the winter months; particularly for kite surfers when a bit of South Easterly and North Westerly wind kicks in and makes Kommetjie the ideal location for some adventurous water sports. Grab your gear, hire it from Gary’s Surf School– conveniently close to most properties to let and self-catering Kommetjie accommodation and check out Magic Seaweed for a wave and wind forecast before you head on down to the beach for hours of wave action.

Dining out

There are numerous, renowned restaurants in and around the Kommetjie area where families, couples and singles can enjoy quality cuisine by the fire-side with a glass of award winning South African wine. The Food Barn in Noordhoek is our top pick, serving up scrumptious farm breakfasts, excellent tapas and small plates and a blend of international and neo-French food at dinner time, it’s the perfect place to eat and conveniently close to Kommetjie. Harbour House Restaurant in Kalk Bay is renowned for seafood and sushi and is just a short car ride away from your self-catering Kommetjie accommodation. Other spots to try are The Hub in Scarborough, Cape Point Vineyards’ restaurant and Café Roux, opposite The Food Barn in Noordhoek.

Winter beach walks

This is, without a doubt, our favourite winter activity in Cape Town and with miles of unspoiled coastline on both side of the peninsula, you’re really spoiled for choice. Long Beach, in Kommetjie, stretches all the way to Noordhoek, with the Kakapo Wreck as a halfway point while Dangers Beach and Fish Hoek beach are great family spots on the Indian Ocean’s coastline too.

Wine tasting

South Africa, and Cape Town in particular, is home to some of the oldest and finest wine estates and vineyards in the world. Cape Point Vineyards, in Noordhoek offers world-renowned Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, a five-minute drive from Kommetjie while the larger Constantia area is home to several award-winning farms that produce a range of excellent cultivars with good vintage. We recommend Groot Constantia, Steenberg and Beau Constantia this winter.

Rugby

A South African favourite, rugby is a great winter activity in the Cape and games are held weekly at Newlands Stadium which is about a thirty-minute drive from Kommetjie.

If you feel like staying in near the fire, you can always catch the game at The Lighthouse Pub or Fisherman’s in Kommetjie but we’d recommend heading down to The Toad in the Village in Noordhoek which has great atmosphere, a warm, cosy fire and an excellent food and drinks menu.

LEARN HOW TO FIND OUT A WELL-COOKED BARBECUE

One of the best and latest trends that we noticed now is the sudden rise in popularity when it comes to smoked meats. We can see that there are hundreds of barbecue joints that sprouted like wild mushrooms out there and as meat lovers, it would be pretty hard for us to find or choose the best ones out there.

Barbecue is a serious business, everyone who loves meat can become an instant critic to the flavor, smokiness, and the taste of its sauce simply because we have our own versions of barbecue that we want these joints to cook it the same way. In fact, there are various barbecue making competitions around the world vying who among them have the most heavenly-tasting barbecue out there.

There are different ways and techniques as well as recipes and sauces that are used according to tradition, and the cities when it comes to making barbecues and smoked meat that is why in this article, let us follow these useful steps in finding the tastiest, and the most authentic smoked meat and barbecue.

RIBS

According to barbecue experts and the best Smokehouse Restaurant, ribs should be cooked with a crispy and caramelized exterior and very tender insides with the meat cooked with a pink tint that is finely textured in the entire slab of the rib. The meat should fall off the bone but not to the point that it is not tender anymore to chew because this is a sign of overcooking.  Ribs should be perfectly cooked that you can bite off a piece of the meat easily but not in a way that it will instantly separate from the bones because you are like eating a mashed meat in that case.

PULLED PORK

If you want to eat a rib which is perfectly cooked it should not look like a pulled pork once you take a bite, but in this case, pulled pork is the ones that spent most of its time being smoked so that it can easily be shredded into pieces and sandwiched in between your favorite buns. But still, barbecue experts say that the pork should still be tender and not mushy because will only make the pork lose its flavors rather than keeping it intact, and an overly soft pulled pork means it is a sign of being overcooked. A good pulled pork must be able to retain its entire flavor, its smokiness, and its spiciness.

BRISKET

Nothing beats a good smoked beef brisket. Since this is a premium kind of barbecue meat, it is quite challenging when it comes to its preparations. The cut of meat that a good brisket must have a grain of muscles that runs in two different directions which makes it require more time to be cooked to perfection. Since it is beef, it should be cooked for more than 10-hours probably 16 hours inside a smoke pit so that it will not become rubbery and tastes bland. A well-smoked brisket is very soft that the meat can melt in your mouth instantly without losing its smokiness and flavors just like what the Smokehouse Restaurant, Bar & Grill Melbourne serve to its customers.

How to Get the Best Out Of Your Vacation on a Shoestring Budget

If you are a University of Queensland student and are planning to take a vacation, then it is not a simple matter of making a few reservations for you. You would be living and studying on a limited budget, and if you do not want to ask your parents for more money for a vacation, then you need to plan a better use of your existing resources. Here are a few ways to plan a low cost vacation without missing out on the fun.

Strength in numbers A vacation for a student is always more fun if you have some fellow travelers with you. But more important, in the context of this blog, a group travelling together would be able to negotiate for much better rates, especially when you are looking for accommodation.

The Smart Dates – If you do not have a constraint of dates (as we would expect students to), then it makes much more sense to fix your travel dates outside the usual time when people would be travelling. For example, avoid the weekends or avoid the usual festival holidays like Easter. If you travel during a regular workweek, you would get much cheaper flight tickets and accommodation.

Compare and contrast The great advantage of the internet is that it brings information to your fingertips very easily. Use that to your advantage to get complete information about travel and accommodation, and find the cheapest options. While looking for best prices, make sure you do not lose out elsewhere. For example, an airline with a cheap ticket might have an unearthly departure time, so make sure it is convenient for you. Again, while looking for accommodation, check out the pictures and user reviews before you get attracted to low prices.

Pack Smart While traveling for a vacation, many people fall into one of two extremes. They either pack too much, leading to extra airline charges and difficulty carrying luggage around. Or they pack very light but end up buying things which they need during their vacation. Leave out all non-essential stuff from your bags, but if there is something which you know you will need, then do not leave it back, or you might need to buy it during your vacation.

Look for student accommodation There are places like Student One which offer wonderful accommodation for students who stay at Brisbane. If you are travelling to Brisbane, then you might want to check out Student One and other places like theirs to see if they have short term accommodation you can use on producing your student identity card and paying the tariffs on a daily basis.

If you are a student and have a limited budget, you need not avoid taking vacations once in a while to recharge your batteries for fear of not having enough money for a vacation. You can follow the above tips and easily plan a fun vacation for your friends and yourself. Proper planning will allow you to take a well-deserved break without having to break the bank.

The Best Places to Go Ice Skating in London

Winter is one of the best times of year to enjoy vacations in London. When there’s a chill in the air, the city really seems to come alive. There is a fun festive spirt, and people become more social as they gather inside to get a reprieve from the cold temperatures outside.

As soon as the weather turns cold and people start furtively whispering about Christmas, London’s many temporary ice-skating rinks begin to pop up the entire city. These are one of the highlights of winter in the city. Thinking about showing off your skills on the ice during your time in London? Or simply want to enjoy something a little different as you travel around the city exploring the sights?

Here are our picks of the best places to go ice-skating in London:

Somerset House:

The ice-skating rink built into the courtyard of Somerset House is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the city, and is sponsored by high end department store Fortnum and Masons. What makes this rink so popular, besides its beauty, is that as well as opening in the day it also opens well into the evening. After dark, the rink really comes alive with thousands of twinkling white Christmas lights and the scenic walls of historic Somerset House as the backdrop. Somerset House is a huge neoclassical building that serves as an impressive space for an ice-skating experience.

If you’re looking for a fun experience with your friends then why not try on of the late night skating sessions? These ‘Skate Late’ events are hosted by top DJs, meaning that you can dance the night away on ice. Travelling with kids? Why not take them along to the Polar Cub Club where they can learn to skate and take to the ice for the very first time.

Hampton Court Palace:

Hampton Court Palace is one of London’s most impressive Royal buildings. It is a magnificent Tudor building that was once the home of Henry VIII (and some of his many wives) and the ice skating rink is set just outside the entrance to the palace so that you can enjoy magnificent views as you skate.

At 1,040-square-metres, this is one of the largest ice-skating rinks in London. A trip to the skating rink here is best combined with a visit into the palace so that you can soak in some of the city’s traditional history and learn more about the beautiful building you are visiting. As an added bonus, the on-site catering within the palace is provided by the Pie Man of Chelsea, which means that you can enjoy a plate of traditional British pie and mash to end your adventure.

The Natural History Museum:

The ice-skating rink at the Natural History Museum is perhaps one of the most famous seasonal ice skating rinks in London. This rink feels wonderfully festive, because it features a 30 foot tall Christmas tree right in its very centre. This is a great place to enjoy a skate if you’re travelling with kids, because they can explore the famous dinosaur exhibits inside the museum either before or after their skate, combining all the educational fun of a trip to a museum with all the physical fun of whizzing around on ice skates.

This rink is sponsored by Hotel Chocolat, so expect decadent hot chocolates and luxury chocolate gifts and snacks in the rink-side café.

The Tower of London:

Another wonderful historical London site has embraced all things festive and winter by adding an ice-skating rink to their forecourt is the Tower of London. The surroundings of the 1,000 year old Tower of London couldn’t be more dramatic: in fact, you may find that you have to stop skating every now and then just to enjoy the views!

This is a relatively small ice skating rink but it is lit in such a dramatic way that the Tower walls around you take centre stage and makes this skating experience feel incredibly important and significant. To really make the most of your visit, explore the Tower of London first then enjoy your skating session at dusk or in the dark. As an added bonus, the Tower of London skating rink features a rink side bar so that you can enjoy a glass of mulled wine or hot chocolate to keep you warm after your adventures. It will be a fun experience that you’ll never forget.
